Fantasy on a Colonial Air contains several variations based upon
William Billings' best known hymn tune - Chester. William Billings
is considered to be the first American composer. He was a tanner by trade,
an uneducated man, but ardently loved coral singing. During the American
Revolution, many of his songs were of a patriotic nature.
